Phillip Edward Alexander 6 December near Port of Spain Sitting there on the Delph's verandah looking out onto Warren Street it was as if i had somehow travelled back in time. We roamed these same streets when we children, Duane Paul Shepherd, Michael Carew, David Carew, Suzanne Delph, Joanne Lee, Roxanne and Allison Teelucksingh, Sean Paul, Dexter and Mark Nathaniel, Dave and Denyl Kowlessar, Bruce Pouchet, my brother Paul and I. There were many others of course, the Pipers, the Kongs, others whose names escapes me, we the people of the youth group, the choir, the confirmation class, before we knew how to be cool. So many days, games, songs, holidays, adventures, heartbreaks, we lived big lives in those days. Tonight many of us gathered with new friends to remember an old friend, Gordon Delph, who lost his battle to cancer this week. His son Sebastian, a man now and taking his place in the world, holding up bravely as far as i could tell, but loss is loss. A hug from Josanne, stealing cheese puffs and cinamon rolls with Allison, liming with Tony and Sandy, stoking new fires even as we extinguished the old ones. I always thought of Gordon as a fun, easy going guy, one of those people who could find something to smile about even if we were at a wake, and i thought of that sitting at what was his wake for all intents and purposes, and i smiled a smile for him. His battle with cancer was one he chose to fight head on, and while it may have bested him in the end, he did not go down easily. All those he leaves to mourn he also left with memories, and at different points between now and his funeral i am sure to be reminded of many more poignant memorable moments in time with Gordon Delph as central character, but if the gathering of friends and family on a Friday night is any measure of riches, Gordon Delph left this world a wealthy man. Rest in peace... 8 December at 14:44 ยท Like
