‘Super Singles’ in honour of Delph

TWO foreigners are in a field of almost 100 players entered to compete in the RMSL (Reliability Maintenance Services Limited) Super Singles Table Tennis Championships tomorrow and Wednesday at Central Regional Indoor Sports Arena, Chaguanas. Guyanese Colin France, who was already over 50 years old when he won the Silverbowl Championships here a few years ago, is in a massive list of 77 men, while Barbados national player Krystle Harvey is among 16 women. In the absence of defending champion Guyana’s Chelsea Edghill, who withdrew at the last minute with injury, Aleena Edwards is heavily favoured to capture the women’s crown. After missing the Classified Championships in February, the ten-time national champ won the other major tournaments on the calendar—National Championships, Tobago Open and “Silverbowl”. Caribbean Under-13 champ Jasher De Gannes, runner-up last month in “Silverbowl”, “Classified” winner Linda Partap Boodhan and Brittany Joseph, who was crowned national champ at age 14 last year, are the other main contenders. After winning four of the five major tournaments last year, Curtis Humphreys goes into the final event without a victory, but the defending champ is still ranked No. 1 after runner-up finishes in “Classified” and “Silverbowl.” The main challengers are 15-year-old Aaron Wilson, who retained his Tobago Open title and was runner-up in “Nationals,” 16-year-old “Classified” champ Arun Roopnarine and five-time national champ Reeza Burke, who was triumphant in “Silverbowl” last month. The field also includes former national champ Anthony “Sandfly” Brown and Lionel Darceuil, a two-time Caribbean singles winner of the 1970s who continues to be a threat. The format of this tournament is different from any other on the calendar, as players begin in round-robin groups and end in a straight round-robin event after the knockout phase. Following the knockout draw, the women’s field will be dwindled to a final five and the men to a final six. Everything will be contested today, except the men’s ‘Big Six”, which will take place on Wednesday night. The tournament is dedicated to the memory of former national champion Gordon Delph, the 1972 Caribbean Under-17 champ who passed away at age 56 on Thursday after a long struggle with brain cancer. The final tournament on the local calendar serves off at 9 a.m. tomorrow. http://www.trinidadexpress.com/sports/Super-Singles-in-honour-of-Delph-234834971.html
